The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a global epidemic. There are questions about how to best support the immune system in the general population, especially during self-isolation. In order to keep infection at bay, an optimal immune response is reliant on a healthy diet and nutrition. Protein intake, for example, is critical for optimum antibody synthesis. Micronutrient deficiency, such as vitamin A or zinc, has been linked to an increased risk of infection. Poor nutritional status is frequently linked to inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which can impact the immune system. Vitamin C and phytochemicals such as carotenoids and polyphenols are examples of dietary elements having significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity [1].
